IndyCar Crash in Vegas Kills Dan Wheldon [Video]

On Sunday, the very popular winner of this year’s Indianapolis 500 Dan Wheldon was killed when his open wheels #77 IndyCar went air born during a 15 car pileup at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The announcement of Wheldon’s demise came from IndyCar series CEO Randy Bernard:

IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race. In honor of Dan Wheldon, the drivers have decided to do a five-lap salute to in his honor.

Three other drivers were injured in the wreck that left carnage even drivers attuned to high-speed crashes found startling. Ryan Brisco said, “I’ve never seen anything like it. The debris we all had to drive through the lap later, it looked like a war scene from ‘Terminator’ or something. I mean, there were just pieces of metal and car on fire in the middle of the track with no car attached to it and just debris everywhere. So it was scary, and your first thoughts are hoping that no one is hurt because there’s just stuff everywhere.”

Race officials decided to call-off the race, but participants ran a 5-lap tribute to Wheldon after the announcement.

Dan Wheldon was 33 and is survived by his wife and 2 children.

WARNING: The following video may be disturbing as it shows multiple views, in slow-motion of the wreck.
