Today on the NBC “Today” show, Time magazine announced the “Protester” as their “Person of the Year”.
The magazine said the dissent that started in the middle east, and eventually made it’s way to Europe and the United States, has changed the face of global politics. Time said the award recognized the protesters for “redefining people power” around the world.
Time editor Rick Stengel said “They dissented, they demanded, they did not despair, even when the answers came back in a cloud of tear gas or a hail of bullets”.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg was last years winner. Some may find the vast difference between the winner of last year compared to this interesting. Zuckerberg would seem to represent capitalism at its best. The protesters, particularly in the United States, have generally seemed to represent a strong anti-capitalist message.
Runner-ups included Admiral William McRaven, commander of the US raid that killed Osama Bin Laden, Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei, and US Republican congressman Paul Ryan.
