Police Handcuff 6 Yr Old

Have you heard about this? A six year old throws a tantrum and ends up handcuffed by police.

Honestly, are you surprised? What other options are left for teachers? Corporal punishment is not acceptable in schools. In fact, if they try in any manner to physically restrain a child they will be sued. There is no more “Wait ’til your dad gets home,” given as the ultimate threat to thwart bad behavior. In fact, a parent who spanks his child may be subject to investigation of child abuse by state agents.

In the store today I ran into a youngster who had definite ideas where mom should shop. He began whining, louder and louder, to go the other direction. Mom talked to the child and then offered the age old, “Do you want a swat?” Apparently, this child knew what it meant and the bad behavior stopped.

This is not to say that parents need to return to spanking children. But there has to be some type of punishment that will serve as a deterrent. An out of control six year old, destroying property and not only disrupting class but setting a terrible example, is old enough to understand and suffer the consequences of her actions.

Is calling in the police and using handcuffs excessive? In my house it sure would be. But if the teachers and principal feel their hands are tied what are the options?
