Costas uses halftime broadcast to rail against guns

Just days after Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend and then himself, venerable sportscaster Bob Costas used his platform to issue an attack on gun ownership.

Quoting an article written by a Kansas City writer, Costas argued that “handguns do not enhance our safety,” noting they “exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.”

Such generalizations are intellectually dishonest and dangerous.

Guns, which save countless lives when in the appropriate hands, are not responsible for any deaths. The mere presence of a gun owner in a certain situations can, by itself, de-escalate a volatile situation.

Instead, Costas continued parroting another individuals comments by suggesting America’s “gun culture ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy and that more convenience store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead.”

The article Costas referenced went deeper into the simpleminded argument for gun-grabbing legislation.

According to the writer, America needs to “reflect” on the “absurdity of the prevailing notion that the second amendment somehow enhances our liberty rather than threatens it.”

Both Costas and the writer from whom he borrowed included their belief that “if Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.”

It’s been said many time before but, in light of this assertion, bears repeating: If someone seriously intends to commit murder, the lack of a firearm will not be a deal breaker.

Though this nation has experienced a dramatic shift to the left in recent years, plenty of people were upset with Costas’ gun control speech in the middle of a football game.

One Twitter user wondered, “is there no venue from which the conservatives can have peace?” Another pointed out Costas’ selective outrage by posting that Costas “feels so strongly about ‘gun violence’ that he never once spoke up about Fast and Furious.”

I suppose it should come as no surprise, though, that a leftist talking head — even during a football game — would tackle an issue only when politically expedient to do so.
