Elementary school hosts toy gun buyback

The unprecedented overreach of public school administrators regarding the issue of guns continues at breakneck speed. Regardless of context, children now regularly face draconian punishment for even mentioning the word.
If rational thought ever again prevails in America, we might look back to one event signaling the point this leftist movement jumped the shark: an elementary school’s toy gun buyback program.
Charles Hill, principal of Strobridge Elementary School in California, organized the “Safety Day” event and offers students books and a chance to win one of four new bikes as incentives to bring in their water guns and other toys he said make it “easier for them to use a real gun.”
Gun rights advocate Yih-Chau Chang of Responsible Citizens of California is a vocal critic of the program, suggesting its mission is misguided.
Calling it a “normal part of growing up,” he explained children have long played imaginative games involving guns and other weapons.
Despite his good intentions, Chang said Hill’s program “doesn’t really educate children about guns or gun safety,” citing the fact firearms are “more often used in defensive ways which prevent violent crime from occurring in the first place.”
Hill also expressed concern that “one of our sixth-graders wanting to fake someone out at a 7-Eleven” would be shot by someone mistaking a toy gun for the real thing.
Of course, Chang responded with the fact that toymakers are “forced to paint guns in bright colors … that make it virtually impossible for an officer to mistake it for a real gun.”
Still, Hill stands by his controversial mission, saying “we need to start early,” apparently through compulsory indoctrination, to assure “older kids” do “not think guns are cool.”
The demonization of guns and their owners is boilerplate rhetoric on the left. Reaching an increasingly younger audience merely creates an increased likelihood the next generation will embrace this misguided worldview.
