The U.S. National Hurricane center announced Wednesday that tropical storm Joaquin had strengthened into a hurricane during the early morning hours.
The National Weather Service says that there may be additional strengthening as the storm heads Northwest towards the mid-Atlantic states.
North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, D.C., New York and New Jersey are currently in the storm’s projected path. Most of NC and VA will likely experience a rain event while the North Carolina outer-banks and more northern states could face a Hurricane landfall.
