Vice Presidential candidate Mike Pence’s campaign plane experienced a hard landing and then left the rain-soaked runway in what Pence described as “10 seconds of uncertainty.”
The aircraft was a Boeing 737 chartered by the Trump/Pence campaign from Eastern Air Lines. The flight originated in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
The plane took out a portion of the overrun barrier before coming to a stop in the grass. No injuries were reported.
The runway was reopened shortly before 7:30 a.m. Friday after crews removed Pence’s airplane from the landing strip and repaired the arresting blocks that had been damaged.
Thursday night, Trump told supporters at a rally, “I just spoke to our future vice president and he’s OK. He was in a big accident with a plane. The plane skidded off the runway and was pretty close to grave, grave danger. He’s fine.”
The NTSB is investigating the cause of the crash.
