Unions have been unabashedly in the tank for the Democrat party for decades, but with President Trump’s pro-worker policies, big labor is shifting its allegiance and it could have election consequences for a long time.
In a Sunday morning interview on Fox Business News, Teamsters Union president James Hoffa applauded President Trump for pulling out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
After a meeting that President Trump held with business and labor leaders last week, several union leadership attendees spoke glowingly of Donald Trump.
North America’s Building Trades Union President Sean McGarvey told pool reporters that labor leaders “believe that President Trump really is going to put America first,” he said. “I’ve been around this town long enough to know things are said in the heat of battle. The details we just heard from the president, we’ve very excited about.”
Garvey continued by comparing it to meetings with previous administrations.”It was by far the best meeting I’ve had [in Washington].”
“It was by far the best meeting I’ve had [in Washington],” Garvey exclaimed.
President Trump’s official dumping of TPP and promise to renegotiate NAFTA pulled in union support from AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka:
“Today’s announcement that the US is withdrawing from TPP and seeking a reopening of NAFTA is an important first step toward a trade policy that works for working people,” Trumka said.
During the 2016 Presidential campaign, Secretary Hillary Clinton reversed her long-held position of supporting NAFTA and TPP in a last-ditch effort to hold onto white, working-class American voters.
As unions have found a President that actually gets things done, puts America first and values the American worker, Democrats may struggle in elections for a long time to come.
