With only eight days left in office, U.S. President Barack Obama has ordered hundreds of military vehicles and approximately 3,000 U.S. troops to Poland in a sudden and out-of-character show of support of America’s NATO allies.
American soldiers landed in Wrocław, home to a key Nato and Polish air base in south-west Poland.
The troops will be followed by around 2,800 tanks and other pieces of military equipment which are being transported by land from Germany.
The Obama administration says that the troops and equipment were planned long ago as a response to the 2014 invasion of Ukraine by Russia, but the Russian Federation’s President Vladimir Putin sees it as an act of aggression.
In Moscow, Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “We perceive it as a threat. These actions threaten our interests, our security. Especially as it concerns a third party building up its military presence near our borders. It’s [the US], not even a European state.”
Obama’s failed red-lines, misunderstanding of cold war strategy and mismanagement of the Middle-East war don’t bode well for whatever this tactical move might bring – but hey .. eight .. more … days!
