In a party line vote on Monday night, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved President Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
The panel voted 11-10 to approve Tillerson with all votes for Rex coming from Republicans and all votes against coming from Democrats and Tillerson should have no trouble getting approved by the full senate which is dominated by Republicans.
Tillerson’s journey to the cabinet became real when Senator Marco Rubio dropped his opposition to the former Exxon Mobile executive.
Democrats opposed the nominee as they felt he was more executive than politician.
But Sen. Ben Cardin of Maryland, the panel’s top Democrat, opposed Tillerson. Cardin says Tillerson’s responses to questions about sanctions against Russia and other important global issues sounded more like answers a corporate executive would give instead of a prospective secretary of state.
If Washington had more executives and fewer community organizers, perhaps more would have gotten done in the last eight years.
