The special election in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District forced a runoff on April 18th that is set to become the most expensive ever.
The runoff is scheduled for June 20th. Recent reports said estimated that the contest had set a record for House races with nearly $30 million spent on just television ads.
The race between Republican Karen Handel and Democrat Jon Ossoff has become a heated one. Democrats are hoping to flip a usually safe GOP seat and set the momentum for the 2018 midterm election. Also, this campaign is seen as a referendum on President Donald Trump.
Democrats have once again turned to the bench to help boost their voter rolls. On Thursday, a Federal judge ruled in favor of extending voter registration past the normal deadline. Democrats hope that enthusiasm for Ossoff will encourage left-leaning voters to register in the district.
The election is being held to replace Tom Price who is now serving as the secretary of health and human services.
The 6th Congressional district includes the east Cobb, north Fulton, including Roswell and north DeKalb areas of metropolitan Atlanta.
