In what might come as a giant blow to Saturday Night Live, a report Thursday said that President Trump may be pulling Sean Spicer from behind the podium – perhaps for good.
One senior White House official said deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will likely appear at the podium more often going forward, while Spicer will keep a senior role in the administration. Another official said to expect fewer on-camera briefings in general — something that the administration has been toying with since Trump entered office.
The possible changes come after a tumultuous week made worse by confused messaging from the administration.
Trump had said that he might get rid of the briefings altogether or perhaps do them himself.
“Unless I have them every two weeks and I do them myself, we don’t have them,” he told Fox News Channel’s “Justice with Judge Jeanine” in an interview on May 12.
Since that statement, the briefings have featured other administration officials more than Spicer. The press secretary has instead held off-camera “gaggles” which are much less intense.
The White House has not made a statement or offered comment on the changes.
