President Donald Trump said that he was going to fire FBI Director James Comey no matter what Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy A.G. Rod Rosenstein had recommended.
“I was going to fire Comey, my decision,” Trump said and added that he “was going to fire regardless of recommendation.”
The president fired Comey Monday evening for his mishandling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation. He was roundly criticized for breaching Department of Justice policy by holding a press conference to discuss the details of an investigation.
“He’s a showboat. He’s a grandstander,” Trump said of Comey. “You take a look at the FBI a year ago, it was in virtual turmoil.”
