The early season woes for the New York Mets continue to mount as they were absolutely destroyed by the Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon by a score of 23-5.
While the final tally seems more fitting to an NFL contest between the Giants and Redskins (which still would have been a butt-ugly beating) the Mets set a standard for futility in this dumpster fire of a game.
It was an incredible onslaught with the beating being led by Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon who finished with an astounding state line of six hits in six at bats, five runs, three home runs and ten runs batted in. It was an uncanny performance that likely won’t be seen again anytime soon.
It was the greatest batting feat in over a century.
The Mets are not in a very good place right now. They just lost slugger Yoenis Cespedes to what could be an extended stay on the disabled list and as Sunday’s baby seal clubbing made clear, the pitching isn’t up to the expected standards of excellence.
There is a guy in the Met’s farm system named Tim Tebow who could give them a boost but he can’t pitch and as was clear on Sunday afternoon, there is no other way to describe New York’s recent pitching other than hopeless.
