Gillespie wins GOP nomination

Ed Gillespie won the Republican nomination for Governor in the Virginia Primary late Tuesday night. Gillespie won with the slight margin of just under 5,000 votes. The Virginia general election will take place November 7, 2017. Gillespie will be running against Democrat Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam. Northam won the nomination, with a comfortable 10-point margin winning the nomination by more than 64,000 votes.

Virginia gubernatorial primary: Republican Party

Candidate Votes Percentage
(R)Ed Gillespie 159,694 43.72%
(R)Corey Stewart 155,343 42.53%
(R)Frank Wagner 50,195 13.74%

Gillespie was the establishment candidate, serving as a former George W. Bush aide. As reported by CNN,  Gillespie worked to tiptoe around the presence of Trump, embracing policies that are popular with Republicans without directly tying his campaign to the President. Gillespie barely beat out big time Trump supporter and enthusiast Corey Stewart. Steward was backed by Bill Mitchell who racked up support and name recognition for the candidate all over twitter. It was clear Stewart was trying his best to tie his candidacy to President Trump tweeting out this early Tuesday. However, this wasn’t enough as Gillespie went onto to clinch the nomination.

Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to cover the race for the next Governor of Virginia very closely. For my most up-to-date information find me on twitter here.
