Georgia Special Election: Ossoff Broadens lead in new poll

A new poll offers a glimpse of increased support for Jon Ossoff in the Georgia special election to replace now Attorney General Jeff Sessions in the House.

A new WSB, Landmark Communications Poll shows that Ossoff increased his support by half a point over Karen Handel since the last poll which occurred before the debate.

The poll’s almost five percent margin of error leaves the race a statistical dead heat according to Landmark Communications pollster Mark Roundtree.

“It’s still definitely a dead heat,” Rountree said. “Nothing has changed in the scheme of the whole campaign. Nothing has changed in the sense that this really does come down to getting out the vote.”

“We are just two weeks out from Election Day and this campaign is in a dead-heat,” Karen Handel’s campaign said in a statement Thursday. “The most recent polling has our campaign just a couple of points behind Jon Ossoff. — but everything is within the statistical margin of error.”

Even a dead heat is a plus for Ossoff as Georgia’s 6th district has been a reliable Republican seat.

“It’s clear Georgia voters want fresh, independent leadership in Washington, not another career politician,” Ossoff’s campaign said in a statement.

Democrats are hoping to gain momentum ahead of the 2018 mid-term elections with a win in Georgia and South Carolina after losing similar races in Kansas, Nebraska, and Montana.

Early voting is underway in the suburban Atlanta 6th district. In person voting will be held on Election Day, June 20.
