68-Year-Old Allegedly Ran Booming Drug Business Out of Old Folks Home

Just call him Smack Granddaddy. A 68-year-old California man has been accused of using his residence at a senior citizens home as a base for a drug distribution business specializing in cocaine, pot, and black tar heroin.

Residents at the Terrace Satellite Senior Homes in the greater Oakland area tipped off police regarding suspicious activity and the senior citizen was arrested after undercover cops witnessed a drug deal.

Landry Daniels – reportedly a 14-time felon – has a long criminal history that may have just ended as a result of him not having the good sense to just retire and collect Social Security.

A 14-time felon accused of using his senior citizens home as a base for selling narcotics is being prosecuted on four felony drug counts, according to court documents and authorities.

Landry Daniels, 68, was arrested June 21 and charged June 23 with two counts of possession for sale of a controlled substance and two counts of transportation of a controlled substance for sale.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges Wednesday and was told to appear Aug. 30 for a pre-trial hearing.  Daniels is currently free on $60,000 bail.

Daniels’ attorney did not return calls seeking comment.

According to court documents, on the day Daniels was arrested, police seized about $20,000 worth of cocaine, black tar heroin and marijuana from his vehicle and apartment in the 66-unit Glen Brook Terrace Satellite Senior Homes 4030 Panama Court where he lived at the time.

Police also seized $471 from Daniels they believe are proceeds from drug sales, according to court documents.

Daniels is accused of selling drugs to non-residents in the parking area of the senior home, and he would also make deliveries, authorities said.

According to the documents, undercover police officers saw him making suspected sales from his KIA SUV about 6:45 p.m. June 21 outside the apartment complex, which is near Piedmont Avenue. The buyers were arrested and Daniels was stopped by police in the 4000 block of Emery Street in Emeryville, according to court records.

The SUV was searched, and in a leather bag in the center console, a plastic sandwich bag containing 14.1 grams of suspected cocaine and 5.6 grams of suspected black tar heroin was found, the documents state.

The cash was found in one of Daniels’ pants pockets.

A search warrant was served later at his apartment where 40 grams of suspected cocaine, 25.5 grams of suspected black tar heroin and 0.8 ounces of suspected marijuana were found, the documents say.

While it may have seemed to Mr. Daniels that a senior citizens community was a prefect cover for his drug business, old people are always home and vigilant when it comes to crime in the area.

He should have moved elsewhere and may soon be doing so if he ends up being sentenced to go to the pokey for felony #15.
