Everything was breaking right for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. The team was coming off of an impressive 13-3 season and were it not for a miraculous Aaron Rodgers pass in the playoffs, may have made it all the way to the Super Bowl.
The team’s success was driven by two stud rookies. Quarterback Dak Prescott played like a seasoned vet in putting up 23 touchdowns with only 4 interceptions. His early maturity was greatly assisted by the running of Ezekiel Elliott who had 1,631 yards and 15 touchdowns.
The stars were all aligning for Dallas to take the next step but in a shock announcement on Friday, the NFL suspended Elliott for six games over a string of incidents including domestic abuse.
Talk about having the rug yanked out from under you.
In the competitive NFC East it was imperative for the Cowboys to get off to a good start. The Elliott suspension is going to make that much more difficult with several tough opponents in that stretch:
Home games against the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers and road contests against the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos are all much more challenging without the one-two punch of Elliott and Prescott.
Elliott is appealing the suspension.
