The Mike Glennon Era Gets Off to a Horrible Start in Chicago

The decision of the Chicago Bears to spend $45 million on former Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup quarterback Mike Glennon in free agency is already looking like a disaster.

Granted that it is early, but Glennon’s abysmal performance in Thursday night’s NFL preseason opener was a stinker and that’s being kind. The ginger giraffe’s second pass of the night was intercepted by Denver Broncos cornerback Chris Harris and returned for a touchdown.

Glennon would also later fumble the ball although it wasn’t entirely his fault due to a bad snap. He managed to put up an incredible 0.0 quarterback rating in his first action with the Bears.

The first preseason games are notoriously sloppy affairs and last night’s game was horrific, at least according to the first half which this humble author personally watched.

There were penalties aplenty and the Broncos dynamic due of Trevor Siemien and Paxton Lynch did nothing to remind fans of John Elway, let alone Brian Griese or give anyone faith that Denver is going to solve their quarterback problems this year.

But it’s the Bears who are in far worse shape as they seek to rebound off of a historically awful 3-13 record and somehow thought that Glennon would be the one to lead the way. It’s not that he was horrendous in Tampa but hasn’t seen the field in an important regular season game in two years.

Bears management caught a lot of grief over trading up one spot to grab North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky in the draft – they were fleeced by the 49ers – but the rookie played well last night although he was playing against the scrubs by the time he got into the game.

At any rate, it looks like Chicago already has a quarterback controversy which is not a positive sign.
