The race riots in St. Louis may have gotten the lion’s share of attention this weekend but there is another Midwestern city that continues to deal with a thug infestation problem.
Chicago shattered the 500-murder mark with still over three months to go and the traditionally desperate times of the holidays rapidly approaching.
This weekend’s body count included a pregnant woman and Windy City Mayor Rahm Emanuel is looking to add 100 more cops to help to get the carnage under control which seems like a half measure. Nothing short of a massive coordinated effort between federal and local law enforcement is going to put this genie back not the bottle.
Windy City ABC affiliate ABC 7 Eyewitness News reports “Chicago marks 500th homicide of year after 10 killed in weekend shootings”:
Chicago police are taking the next step to cut street violence on the heels of a deadly weekend that saw the city record its 500th homicide of 2017.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel is announcing more cops on the streets after 10 people were killed in shootings this weekend.
The most recent fatal shooting occurred at 60th and South Richmond streets at about 8:20 p.m. Sunday. Police said a woman and two men were shot.
The 42-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. She has been identified to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as 42-year-old Catherine Barnett. One of the men was transported to Stroger Hospital in serious condition while the other wounded man suffered a graze wound and refused treatment at the scene.
Mayor Emanuel said he plans to deploy nearly 100 officers to various districts as part of the two-year hiring plan to add nearly 1,000 officers to the police department.
Over the weekend, Chicago recorded its 500th homicide for the year.
A pregnant woman was among the four people shot to death in a brazen attack at 8:35 p.m. Friday that stemmed from an ongoing gang war in the Southwest Side Brighton Park neighborhood, officials said. The woman and three men were found in a car by officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 4700-block of South Fairfield, where dozens of gold casings from an assault rifle littered the street and sidewalk nearby.
It’s difficult to imagine that this mounting pile of dead people would be anything like Mayor Emanuel’s famous “good crisis” and he could finally pay a political toll if the killings can’t be slowed or at least stopped.
Food for thought?
Liberals cried bloody murder over the remake of the 1974 Charles Bronson classic vigilante film “Death Wish” which is set to release in November.
The inability of Emanuel’s city to stop the killings may cause some to consider whether it is time to take matters into their own hands which will only add to the numbers although a few more of the bad guys may end up among them. Not that I would ever advocate such things but some people are very impressionable and find inspirations for criminal acts in popular culture and could be driven to act out their revenge fantasies in real life.
The city is the proverbial powder keg waiting to blow and an example of how inept that Emanuel is when it comes to running a big city.
