If You Visit Mexico, Don’t Drink the … 7UP?

An American poison and drug information center issued a warning this week about tainted soda manufactured in Mexico.

Banner Health in Maricopa County, Arizona, issued a warning on its website stating that 7UP consumed in Mexicali, Mexico, was contaminated with methamphetamine (meth).

Experts remind people to be vigilant when traveling. “It is important to check that the seal for any food and drink consumed is still intact and show no signs of tampering,” said Dr. Daniel Brooks, Banner Poison and Drug Information Center medical director. “If you notice any difference in color, taste or smell, throw it out.”

The tainted product came from Mexico and no contamination has been reported in the United States.

Side-effects of consuming meth-laced soda include, but are not limited to:

• Irritation of, or abnormal taste in, the mouth our throat
• Burning to the esophagus or abdomen
• Nausea or vomiting
• Difficulty breathing
• Fast or irregular heartbeat

The 7UP contamination comes just months after concerns of tainted alcohol that led to the deaths of several people.
