There is only one word that can be used to describe Washington Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg in Friday night’s NLDS opener – dominating.
The Nats were looking to finally put to rest a history of postseason woe and Strasburg was throwing fireballs, holding the potent Cubs scoreless until the sixth inning when an Anthony Rendon error led to the baserunner that would prove to be the winning run.
Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks had also been shutting down the Washington offense which if it were able to produce anything, it would have likely been too much for Chicago to overcome with Strasburg pitching like he was.
The Cubbies put up two in the sixth and Strasburg lasted one more inning before leaving with ten strikeouts as well as the loss. The dude deserved better and once again, Washington’s offense turned in a postseason stinker.
The final score was 3-0.
The World Champion Cubs are a resilient bunch and if they can manage to steal another game on Saturday against Gio Gonzalez, hardly the best that Washington has to offer but with Max Scherzer not slated to return until Monday, he will have to hold down the fort against the Cub’s bats.
Jon Lester gets the start for Chicago.
The game will start at 5:30 pm ET
