The U.S. House of Representatives held a vote today on whether to consider the impeachment of President Donald Trump, but the measure failed as a majority of Democrats and all Republicans voted to table the measure.
In a lengthy statement, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and minority whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said, “Now is not the time to consider articles of impeachment.” Pelosi has said that any push for impeachment should wait until there is any evidence worth considering.
Rep. Al Green (D-TX) is spearheading the effort to impeach the president citing Trump’s alleged ties to “Neo-Nazism” and said in a statement that the fight to impeach the president is not over.
“This is the first vote, but it will not be the last,” he said.
Democrats that voted against the measure said that it was little more than a publicity stunt.
Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Mich., said Democrats should not be drawn into a process “that’s not thoughtful or complete or might not even be the conclusion we ought to draw.”
“This is a serious thing. It ought not to be done on a whim,” Kildee added.
Impeachment works similar to the criminal process of a grand jury hearing during which a decision is made whether or not there is enough evidence to charge a suspect with specific crimes. If an impeachment vote is successful, the Senate acts as judge and jury to decide guilt or innocence.
The House, failing to pass the low bar of impeachment, has all but killed their effort to indict Donald Trump for the foreseeable future.
126 Democrats voted against the measure, 4 voted present and 58 voted yes.
