Republicans set to pass tax reform today; ‘A moment decades in the making’

Republicans are expected to pass on Tuesday their tax reform plan first in the House then followed by the Senate and will get it to the Desk of President Donald Trump shortly afterward.

House Speaker Paul Ryan released a video early Tuesday in which he calls the first reform of the American tax code in 30 years “a moment decades in the making.”

The measure is expected to pass both houses of Congress along party-line votes with all Democrats and a small number of Republicans rejecting the economy-boosting legislation.

House Republicans will easily pass the bill as they hold a comfortable majority, but the Senate may require Vice President Mike Pence to break a 50-50 tie as Senator John McCain is recovering from illness due to his cancer treatment. Pence canceled a middle-east trip to make sure he would be available if his vote is needed.

Tax reform is President Donald Trump’s first signature initiative to go through Congress. The president’s immigration reform and infrastructure programs are expected to go next before the legislature.
