President Donald Trump on Thursday said that any deal to help DREAMers would have to include money for the way, and an end to both the visa lottery and chain migration.
“Any legislation on DACA must secure the border with a wall. It must give our immigration officers the resources they need to stop illegal immigration and also to stop visa overstays. And crucially, the legislation must end chain migration. It must end the visa lottery.” the president said during a meeting with Republican Senate leaders. “I’d love to take care of DACA, but only under these conditions.”
The visa lottery, actually named the Diversity Immigration Visa program, was intended to bring in immigrants from countries that had previously had few people immigrating into the U.S. It has instead become a security nightmare as applicants are chosen at random. Chain migration is a policy that allows immigrants to bring in anyone with a familial relationship of any type. The combination of these two programs could allow a random citizen from a dangerous country to enter the United States and bring in several others regardless of their value to the United States.
The president is joined by Republican Congressional leaders at a Camp David retreat this weekend to discuss immigration reform, the 2018 legislative agenda and midterm election strategy.
