President Donald Trump tweeted Thursday that there were many signs the 19-year-old Florida school shooter was mentally disturbed and urged Americans to report “such instances to authorities.”
“So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again,” the president tweeted Thursday.
The suspect, Nikolas Cruz, opened fire in the hallways of a Florida high school Wednesday afternoon, killing a total of 17 individuals.
Cruz reportedly posted on his Instagram account about killing animals and talked to former classmates about doing target practice in his backyard with a pellet gun. His former classmates describe him as a loner, a shy student who mostly kept to himself.
A former teacher of Cruz told reporters Wednesday that the school may have targeted the boy as a potential threat to other students. The teacher recalls an email the school sent to teachers telling them that Cruz should not be allowed on school premises with a backpack. The school reportedly told teachers that the boy had threatened a number of students.
