A police officer from the border town of Nogales, Ariz., was shot and killed on Friday, with what law enforcement believe was an AK-47, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told The Daily Caller News Foundation.
The suspect is believed to have car-jacked a vehicle before shooting the Nogales Police Department officer who pulled him over, the source said. The suspect proceeded to steal at least two more vehicles and led multiple law enforcement agencies on an extended manhunt before he was captured Friday evening, the source said.
State, federal and local law enforcement were all involved in the manhunt, the source said. The suspect at one point led authorities to the Mariposa point of entry, before stealing a vehicle and driving off once again, the source said.
The suspect fired at law enforcement each time he ran into officers, the source said, before eventually ditching his AK-47 and surrendering to law enforcement.
An officer had been shot and was in critical condition, Nogales police confirmed on Twitter. The officer was shot in a suspected carjacking, local media first reported.
