President Donald Trump told reporters Tuesday that due to the porous southern border situation, the United States would use its military to guard the border.
“We cannot have people flowing into our country illegally, disappearing, and by the way never showing up for court,” the president said during a meeting with the president’s of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. “Until we can have a wall and proper security, we are going to be guarding our border with our military. That’s a big step.”
Trump’s remarks come after Mexican officials broke up a group of 1,500 immigrants that were crossing Mexico in hopes of thwarting U.S. border laws. The “caravan” as the media has called them, was organized by an open borders group hoping to show immigrants how easy it is to break immigration laws in the United States.
The U.S. and Mexico are currently renegotiating the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement and Trump says that Mexico’s assistance with border security is going to be part of it.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) had already deployed the National Guard to the border before Mexico stopped the army of aliens from approaching.
