Downing Eight Cups Of Coffee A Day Could Actually Be Healthy Now

by Molly Prince

Drinking up to eight cups of coffee each day could lead to a longer life, new research shows.

study published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine found that individuals who drink between one and eight cups of coffee on a daily basis had a 10 to 15 percent lower probability of dying over the following 10 years.

Approximately 500,000 people participated in the study, which utilized genetic data, as well as medical and lifestyle questions, reported CNBC. Data was collected and analyzed over a 10 year period beginning in 2006.

The study did not clarify the reasoning why coffee consumption could extend lifespans, however, researchers believe it may have to do with antioxidants. Coffee contains numerous antioxidants that help to protect healthy cells from getting damaged, Erikka Loftfield, a researcher at the U.S. National Cancer Institute and the study’s lead author, told The Associated Press.

In addition to the level of caffeine, the experiment also controlled for differences between instant and ground coffee. Similar results were found for the aforementioned controls.
