Poll: Record-Low 47% Extremely Proud to Be Americans

A record low 47% of people are extremely proud to be Americans a new Gallup Poll reveals. The poll also shows only 32% of Democrats are extremely proud to be Americans.

Gallup notes that “for the first time in Gallup’s 18-year history asking U.S. adults how proud they are to be Americans, fewer than a majority say they are “extremely proud.” Gallup further notes this is well below the peak of 70% in 2003.

The poll further reveals that 74% of Republicans said they are extremely proud to be Americas.

Gallup asked: “How proud are you to be an American–extremely proud, very proud, moderately proud, only a little proud or not proud at all?”

Gallup reports, “While the 47% who are extremely proud to be Americans is a new low, the vast majority of Americans do express some level of pride, including 25% who say they are “very proud” and 16% who are “moderately proud.” That leaves one in 10 who are “only a little” (7%) or “not at all” proud (3%).”

Gallup also notes the combined 72% who are extremely or very proud to be Americans is also the lowest in Gallup’s trend.

The poll reveals that currently, 32% of Democrats are extremely proud. Gallup notes this down from 43% in 2017 and 56% in 2013. Gallup points out that the “decline preceded the election of Donald Trump but has accelerated in the past year.”

Further, on the political aspect, Gallup reports less than half of the independents, 42%, are also extremely proud. That is down slightly from 48% a year ago, and 50% in 2013.

Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted June 1-13, 2018, with a random sample of 1,520 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. For results based on the total sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points.
