President Donald Trump ordered the FBI to conduct an investigation into Christine Blasey Ford’s allegation of sexual misconduct against Judge Brett Kavanaugh as requested by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday.
“I’ve ordered the FBI to conduct a supplemental investigation to update Judge Kavanaugh’s file. As the Senate has requested, this update must be limited in scope and completed in less than one week,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted on behalf of the president.
The move comes after the committee convened to vote on advancing Kavanaugh’s nomination to the full Senate with an 11-10 recommendation on a party-line vote. Republican Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona voted “yes” with the condition that an FBI probe would briefly investigation Ford’s accusation against Kavanaugh.
Prior to the committee meeting, Flake announced that he would be voting to confirm Kavanaugh. Only after speaking with Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware did he include the condition of the FBI investigation.
“I would only be comfortable moving on the floor if the FBI has done more investigation than they already had,” Flake said. “We owe them due diligence.”
