The controversy surrounding Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court has given Republicans a boost in the polls heading into November’s midterm elections, said Real Clear Politics analyst Sean Trende on “Fox & Friends” Thursday.
“What we’re seeing is that across a number of polling metrics, the president’s and the Republican’s performance is improving,” he said.
“The president’s job approval is up. The Republicans are up in a number of battleground states. And I think this is a clear response to the fight over the Kavanaugh nomination.”
Trende also said Republicans are responding positively to President Donald Trump’s attitude towards Kavanaugh’s accuser Christine Blasey Ford and highlighted Senate Democrats who are vulnerable to defeat.
“You have these five Democrats running in states that President Trump won by 20 points. Heidi Heitkamp’s in a state the president won by 40. So she wins by latching onto the president — being sort of a Republican. A high-profile vote like a vote against Kavanaugh is a really tough vote for her to take,” he continued.
Trende claimed the GOP is still in a dogfight with an energized Democratic base, but said they should feel better about their position with the electorate.
“What we’re seeing is a surge in Republican enthusiasm. Again, across polls,” he concluded. “And so, you know, the Republicans aren’t out of the woods by any means, but things are looking less grim for them than they were a couple weeks ago.”
