President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that his administration has told the Honduran government that they must stop the caravan of migrants heading to the United States or risk losing U.S. foreign aid.
“The United States has strongly informed the President of Honduras that if the large Caravan of people heading to the U.S. is not stopped and brought back to Honduras, no more money or aid will be given to Honduras, effective immediately!” the president posted to Twitter Tuesday morning.
The president’s message comes just after he announced that his administration is looking at a new policy to handle minors traveling with adults who cross into the country illegally. The new policy would allow the adults to choose whether to be detained with their children for the entirety of migration processing or have their children held in a separate facility so that another guardian could take responsibility for them. Either way, any adult entering the United States illegally should expect to be detained until their case is reviewed by authorities if the policy is implemented.
The president also highlighted a Washington Examiner op-ed that praised his administration for their efforts along the southern border.
“Op-Ed praises Trump Administrations efforts at the Border,” he tweeted. “Finally, the government has taken steps to stop releasing unaccompanied minors to criminals and traffickers.”
“This was done by the Obama Administration!” he added.
Later in the day, Trump re-affirmed his policy of preventing illegal aliens from entering the country.
