Mitt Romney’s op-ed was not brave, scathing, honest, nor was it necessary

Senator-elect Mitt Romney (R-UT) wrote an anti-Trump editorial that was published Wednesday morning. While the left sees his article as a crack in the Republican ranks, the op-ed doesn’t really say anything that other war-mongering RINO’s haven’t already said and it doesn’t really provide any new criticism of President Trump. Romney appears to be following in the footsteps of former Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake. Romney really didn’t do or say anything all that controversial or brave.

First, Romney chose the far-left, anti-Trump, incredibly biased Washington Post to publish his ill-conceived critique. His opinion piece fits right in with the tripe produced by the Post’s cadre of pretentious ideologues.

Second, Romney’s article wasn’t the scathing rebuke it’s being made out to be. It’s more a ham-handed attempt to gather the sentiments expressed by progressive zealots and swamp-RINO elitists.

The Trump presidency made a deep descent in December. The departures of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly, the appointment of senior persons of lesser experience, the abandonment of allies who fight beside us, and the president’s thoughtless claim that America has long been a “sucker” in world affairs all defined his presidency down.

What Romney’s words really say is that he believes that Trump’s plans to draw down troops in Afghanistan and Syria is not what he would have done. He is a war-mongering globalist – but we already knew that. It’s nothing new and Romney’s disagreement with the president’s plan to let Middle-Easterners die for their own dirt shouldn’t shock anyone.

Romney continues but says little more than he said in the first paragraph.

But, on balance, his conduct over the past two years, particularly his actions last month, is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office.

It appears that his disagreement with a U.S. troop drawdown in the middle-east is what’s at the center of this entire rant. Nothing new.

Romney then praises Trump for doing what he promised:

He was right to align U.S. corporate taxes with those of global competitors, to strip out excessive regulations, to crack down on China’s unfair trade practices, to reform criminal justice and to appoint conservative judges. These are policies mainstream Republicans have promoted for years.

The former Governor, failed presidential candidate and now junior Senator then cites a Pew Research Poll to show how Trump’s policies and words have negatively shaped world opinion against the United States.

Trump’s words and actions have caused dismay around the world. In a 2016 Pew Research Center poll, 84 percent of people in Germany, Britain, France, Canada and Sweden believed the American president would “do the right thing in world affairs.” One year later, that number had fallen to 16 percent.

But Romney’s assessment is a bit dishonest. The question in the survey he refers to actually found that “only a small share says the U.S. is doing more to address global problems.” That’s different than doing “the right thing in world affairs.” Trump is not a globalist, Romney is – nothing to see here folks and certainly nothing we didn’t already know.

That same survey found that “Most say relations between their country and the U.S. have not changed over the past year” and that the “U.S. international role seen as robust by many.” It would seem that the United States is not seen as weakly as Romney would have readers believe – and that’s according to the very survey he cited. In fact, that same poll found that not only does the world see the U.S. as the world’s leading economic power – most in the world prefer it that way.

Mitt closes his ridiculous tirade with a promise to lash out at the president if Trump issues any “significant statements or actions that are divisive, racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, dishonest or destructive to democratic institutions.” After having read Romney’s pointless diatribe, I have no doubt that he will see everything Trump does as racist, divisive, sexist and anti-immigrant.

Nothing new here folks, nothing new at all.
