New Bill Introduced to Allow Direct Citizen Funding of Border Walls

Congressman Warren Davis (R-OH 8) announced Thursday that a new bill was introduced in the House to allow private citizens to directly fund the construction and maintenance of border barriers.

“‘Buy a Brick, Build the Wall Act’ is newly introduced as HR32,” Davidson posted on Twitter. “It directs @USTreasury to establish a fund allowing private contributions to fund and maintain border walls. Millions of Americans agree and want to chip in to help secure our borders.”

While private citizens can voluntarily send money to the Treasury, they cannot direct how the money is used and it will go into the General Fund for Congress to spend as it sees fit. That is an obstacle for private funding efforts like Brian Kolfage’s goFundme page dedicated to raising money for a border wall. Kolfage’s page has raised almost $19 million from over 300,000 people, but has no way to direct the money for the purpose of building a wall.

With anti-border security Democrats holding the majority in the House of Representatives, the bill has little chance for passage – if it even makes it out of committee.
