President Trump rejects Pelosi’s travel request

President Donald Trump rejected Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s request to travel on government transport for an upcoming 7-day junket.

“Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed,” Trump said in an official letter. “We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over.”

The president can’t prevent her from taking the trip, only from using federal transport to facilitate her public relations outing.

“Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative,” Trump wrote.

Trump expressed his sincere desire to hold negotiations with Democrats who, so far, have not offered any compromise on border barrier funding.

“In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate,” he wrote. “I also feel that, during this period, it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the Shutdown.”

Pelosi spent the Christmas recess in Hawaii while Trump canceled a planned trip to Florida in hopes of continuing negotiations during the shutdown. The Speaker also joined other Democrats in refusing a negotiating session yesterday with the president.

The negotiations are over funding for physical barriers at the border as requested by the men and women who patrol that area every day.
