Taliban Will Prevent Afghanistan From Being Terror Safe Haven as Optimism Rises Over Prospects of Peace Deal

U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has been negotiating with the Taliban on a peace deal in Doha for the last 4 days with talks set to continue Friday.

New reporting confirms reports from Conservative Daily News, the Afghan Herald, and other outlets that the Taliban has agreed to block other terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda, and ISIS from ever using Afghanistan to attack the United States. The agreement by the Taliban is widely seen as a breakthrough in very tough negotiations with the narco-terror group.

The agreement would see the United States withdraw troops from Afghanistan although the two sides haven’t agreed on the time table. The expectation in Washington, Kabul, Islamabad, and Doha is that troop withdrawal will happen.

The Taliban and regional actors like China, Pakistan, India don’t want to see a repeat of what happened in 1990. What the US and the Taliban will agree to is unclear, though Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah (a position different from the Afghan President) says he does feel reassured by the US administration depending on what happens pertaining to the 14,000 troops in the country.

Sayed Akbar Agha, a former Taliban official with extensive Taliban contacts said, “As I know, both sides agreed on both issues and they will possibly announce it later today, Mr. Agha said. It coincides with Taliban officials giving basic details of the deal but they have refrained from commenting further until an official statement is made. An announcement is expected before Noon on Friday.
