In a position far outside the mainstream of the Pro-Choice vs Pro-Life debate in this country, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam (D) defended the Repeal Act which removes the restrictions that remain on abortion in the state, as now abortion in Virginia under this law is legal even to the point of delivering the baby.
The Governor said, “This is why decisions such as this should be made by providers, physicians, and the mothers and fathers that are involved.”
He continued, “When we talk about third-trimester abortions, these are done with the consent of obviously the mother, with the consent of the physician—more than one physician, by the way—and it’s done in cases where there may be severe deformities. There may be a fetus that’s non-viable.”
The author of the bill, delegate Kathy Tran (D-Fairfax), admitted it allowed abortion when the mother goes into labor! “If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother. So I think this was really blown out of proportion. We want the government not to be involved in these types of decisions.”
Nationwide 3rd-trimester abortion only has the support of 13% of Americans according to center-left leaning Gallup polling.
The reaction to the shocking comments prompted a fierce backlash with RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel tweeting “This is horrific. Dem Gov. Ralph Northam, a pediatrician himself, is defending born-alive abortions: “The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired.”
Conservative radio host Ben Shapiro reacted saying “This is simply pure evil” and he also retweeted a tweet from Richard Berry:
“
@LarryOConnor Remember when the Latino Victory Fund ran an ad for Northam features a white man trying to Murder minority children in a pickup truck sporting a Confederate Flag, a Tea Party license plate, and a Gillespie bumper sticker.”
Ralph Northam’s spokesperson said that it would only apply in cases of fetal abnormality without defining fetal abnormality.
