Firefighters Forced To Walk A Mile Through Highway Traffic To Save Woman After Ambulance Crashes

A pair of firefighters trekked a mile on the highway to rescue and deliver an injured bus driver after their ambulance crashed before they could make it to the crash site.

Two Maryland Heights firefighters rushed up a St. Louis highway to save a woman who’d been injured after she lost control of her school bus and crashed, according to KSDK-TV. After the ambulance dispatched to the scene lost control and collided into a guardrail alongside the highway, firefighter Shaylor Taetz and his partner abandoned the vehicle and retrieved the woman on foot, The Associated Press reported Monday.

The pair walked an entire mile up Interstate 270 with a stretcher to get the bus driver to a nearby hospital, TheAP reported.

“This is dedication! Icy roads weren’t going to prevent Maryland Heights Fire Protection District from ensuring this person got the care he needed. Please share this post to thank these selfless heroes,” the DePaul Hospital wrote in thanks on Facebook.

The woman’s injuries were not grave, according to TheAP.

Traffic avoided the threesome as they crossed the icy road on their way to the hospital, TheAP reported.

“I took this picture this morning. So grateful for all the amazing first responders,” Carol Parks, the passerby who snapped the photo, wrote on Facebook.
