President Trump set to Sign Executive Order Allocating More Funds for the Wall

As it seems likely that President Trump will sign a border security spending bill “compromise” that congressional negotiators have agreed to, the President may also sign an executive order allocating more funds for the border wall.

According to the Washington Post, “A White House official told The Post this morn that President Trump sees signing the border deal, if passed by Congress, as the way to avoid another shutdown. But, he would also likely pursue an executive order to reallocate federal funds to barrier projects, the official said.”

Trump announced Tuesday that, while he was “not happy” with the deal, he expected to secure additional funds to build the wall from other sources.

“Was just presented the concept and parameters of the Border Security Deal by hard working Senator Richard Shelby,” the president posted on Twitter. “Looking over all aspects knowing that this will be hooked up with lots of money from other sources.”

The administration has previously signaled that they might also use a National Emergency declaration to allow allocation of federal funds to the construction of physical barriers at the border and Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX)  said they should consider the use El Chapo’s seized assets to fund the construction of the border wall.

Democrats have largely shunned Trump’s efforts to make an end-run around Congress to fund the border barriers that the Border Patrol has said they desperately need.

“As for moving around the money, he needs Congressional permission to do it,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters Tuesday. “He doesn’t have the authority to do it without House permission.”
