Three women have anonymously sued Uber for negligence after Uber failed to report 9 sexual assaults by persons pretending to be Uber drivers.
Three women who signed themselves as “Jane Doe” filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday claim that they were raped by persons who pretended to be Uber drivers, according to CNN Business. The Jane Does are sueing Uber for negligence, saying that Uber knew about these fake drivers targeting women who had been drinking but failed to warn passengers, according to CNN Business.
“The unwitting public, and in particular women looking for a safe ride home, have been lulled into believing that the Uber App summons a safe means of transportation,” the lawsuit said. “Instead, once the Uber app has been engaged, single female passengers leaving crowded nightclub/bar/restaurant locations become vulnerable to the fake Uber scheme.”
Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department allegedly told Uber at least five times about sexual assaults committed in a popular Los Angeles night club area, according to court filings revealed by CNN Business. Law enforcement also reported these crimes before the first Jane Doe was assaulted on June 28, 2017.
The lawsuit alleges that Uber “egregiously” chose to hide dangerous issues involving “young, intoxicated female passengers, the very demographic targeted by Uber’s safety marketing campaigns,” according to CNN Business.
Two of the women, Jane Doe 1 of Culver City and Jane Doe 3 of Van Nuys, were assaulted by the same man outside a night club in West Hollywood, according to the lawsuit. Jane Doe 1 was assaulted in June 2017 and Jane Doe 3 was assaulted in February 2018. The third woman, Jane Doe 2 of Alhambra, was kidnapped and raped in December 2017.
The lawsuit comes after twenty-one-year-old Samantha Josephson was kidnapped and murdered in South Carolina on March 31 after getting into a car she thought was her Uber.
