Congressional Democrats reacted to Alabama’s new ban on abortion by arguing that the bill will effectively kill people.
Republican Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Wednesday signed into law the bill, which bans abortion in all cases except where necessary to protect the life or health of the mother.
Roughly 6,700 abortions were performed in 2017, the most recent year available, according to the Alabama Center for Health Statistics.
Democrats claimed the abortion ban is sentencing women to death.
“Alabama’s law won’t stop abortion, but it will kill women,” Democratic California Rep. Harley Rouda wrote on Twitter. “Women’s bodies are under attack, and I won’t sit idly by as millions of Americans lose their freedom to choose.”
“Banning abortion will not stop abortion – it just means that more women will die or be injured trying to access an abortion,” wrote Democratic Maryland Rep. David Trone.
“The #AlabamaAbortionBan is ridiculous – we must demand that women have the choice to make decisions about their own bodies,” added Trone.
Democratic California Sen. Kamala Harris, one of 23 Democrats running for president in 2020, told reporters that women will die as a result of tighter abortion laws, USA Today reported.
When previously asked by The Daily Caller News Foundation, Harris avoided saying whether she thinks abortion is ever immoral.
Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, another 2020 candidate, similarly suggested that eliminating abortion will prove deadly.
“When I was a little girl, it was a time when back alley abortions killed people. And when young women, girls really, killed themselves rather than face an unplanned pregnancy. We’re not going back — not now, not ever,” Warren said.
Democratic California Rep. Katie Porter also asserted that banning abortion will lead to deaths.
“This is unconstitutional, unconscionable, and un-American,” Porter wrote on Twitter.
“I will never––I repeat: never––stop fighting for women’s reproductive freedom. Let’s be absolutely clear: women will die and doctors could spend up to 99 years in prison with Alabama’s new law,” Porter added.
“Let’s like fight like our lives depend on it––because they do,” she added in another tweet.
