President Donald Trump’s former business partner Felix Sater is set to testify Friday about his time working on the proposed Trump Tower project in Moscow in 2016.
Sater was the chief negotiator for the Moscow Trump Tower project and will testify behind closed doors Friday, he told Politico. Sater’s interview is part of an investigation by the House Intelligence Committee regarding Trump’s attempts to expand his brand into Moscow.
The committee will be calling on other former staff to testify behind closed doors over the next few weeks, The Washington Post reported.
The Trump Tower development began in 2015 and continued as Trump was campaigning for presidency in 2016. The investigation is part of the committee’s inquiry into whether or not Trump could have been compromised by Russia.
Sater worked with Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen, currently in jail for lying as well as tax and campaign finance crimes, on the project. Cohen first told Congress that building efforts ended in January 2016, but later admitted that he had lied, WaPo reported.
Sater and Cohen also discussed how to use Russia to help them with the project and get Trump elected.
“Our boy can become president of the USA and we can engineer it,” Sater wrote Cohen according to a 2015 email. “I will get all of Putin’s team to buy in on this, I will manage this process.”
This is the second time Sater has been set to testify about attempting to expand Trump’s business into Russia. His first call to speak in May was postponed.
The Moscow Trump Tower did not end up being built.
