When looking at one of the hottest digital technology trends at the moment, you’d be remiss to create a list that doesn’t include 3D printers. While they may have suffered a small slowdown last year, by late 2018 they were well on the rise again and 2019 has been no different. This year alone, 3D printers, services, and materials are expected to surpass US$2.7 billion, and all signs point to over $3 billion for 2020.
To say they are getting a bit of attention is an understatement, as now it has moved past businesses being the only ones to use the technology, and suddenly home use applications have become a very real thing. So, as the technology continues to evolve getting better, more accurate, and faster, has the time finally come to invest in a 3D printer for home use? Let’s take a closer look.
One big reason for people to consider purchasing a 3D printer for home use is that there are very real cost savings to be had. There are all kinds of things you can print at home that you would otherwise need to go buy in the store. Things such as a tablet or smartphone case, spare parts for appliances and furniture, household items like a paper towel holder or shower curtain rings, the list goes on and on.
What this also means is that you don’t have to go out to the store to find that specific item you’re after, or order it online and then wait for it to arrive. It’s one of those items that you don’t truly get a sense of what it’s capable of until you start playing around with it.
If you happen to be a parent, owning a 3D printer can also be an excellent learning opportunity for kids. These printers give kids an opportunity to learn in a way that is engaging, fun, and interesting. They can make their own models and creations and then print them. With such an emphasis on science in technology in today’s world, it’s also a great way to get them thinking about a future career in the field.
Of course, if you’re going to allow your child to use the 3D printer, you will need to supervise as the item will get very hot during the printing stage and immediately following.
When 3D printer technology was first released, the price tag was extremely high, that and the fact the printers were huge. Today, the size of the printers has shrunk considerably, as has the price. The affordability continues to be improved upon as more and more technology is released. All you have to do is take a look at this 3D printing blog to get a sense at just how big this market is, and the technology driving it.
This is just a small look at the pros in owning a 3D printer at home, as it truly allows everyone to tap into their creative side when it comes to project ideas, and have some fun in the process.
