Labor Secretary Alex Acosta told reporters Friday morning that he will leave the department over negative attention by the media over his handling of Jeffrey Epstein’s plea agreement more than a decade ago.
“I do not think it is right and fair for this administration’s labor department to have Epstein as the focus rather than the incredible economy that we have today,” Acosta said to reporters at a press availability with the president Friday morning.
President Trump said that Acosta decided to leave of his own accord and that it was not the president’s decision
“He doesn’t have to do this,” Pres. Trump said as Labor Sec. Alex Acosta announced his resignation. “He’s doing this not for himself, he’s doing this for the administration.”
The president also reiterated that he did not respect Epstein and that he “threw him out of a club” many years ago.
When asked about the administration’s actions on the citizenship question, he told reporters that he didn’t back down, he “backed up.”
