DOD Conducts Test of Previously Banned Ground Launch Cruise Missile

On Sunday, August 18, 2019, at 2:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, the Department of Defense conducted a flight test of a conventionally-configured ground-launched cruise missile at San Nicolas Island, California. The test missile exited its ground mobile launcher and accurately impacted its target after more than 500 kilometers of flight. Data collected and lessons learned from this test will inform the Department of Defense’s development of future intermediate-range capabilities.

The missile is one banned under the now-defunct Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty from 1987 that was scrapped in August after Russia repeatedly violated the agreement. The agreement banned missiles with a range between 500 km (310 miles) and 5,500 km ( 3,410 miles).

Defense officials had said last March that this missile likely would have a range of about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) and that it might be ready for deployment within 18 months.
