Eight children are dead and two injured after a stabbing spree at a Chinese elementary school took place Monday.
The massacre occurred in the Chaoyangpo village of Enshi city in Hubei province at at approximately 8 a.m. on Monday, the first day of the new semester, police said Tuesday, the Associated Press reports.
The suspect has been identified by authorities as a 40-year-old man named Yu. The suspect is now in police custody as police investigate the case further. Authorities have not determined the motive for the attack.

Exactly how the children were attacked was not disclosed in police reports, according to the Associated Press.
The suspect was reportedly released from Hubei prison last June after serving a sentence for attempted murder, according to the Guangzhou-based Southern Weekly which sited prison staff accounts, the Associated Press reports.
Similar stabbing sprees have recently occurred in China.
In June 2018, a man reportedly stabbed two children to death outside of a Shanghai elementary school, Reuters reported.
In April 2018, a man killed nine and injured a dozen outside of a middle school in Shaanxi province, allegedly seeking revenge for having been bullied at the school, the New York Times reported.
