At Least 7 Injured, 4 Dead in NAS Pensacola Shooting – Shooter Was from Middle-East – Others Detained

Naval Air Station Pensacola was put on lockdown Friday morning after a shooting sent at least 8 people to local hospitals and now four people, including the shooter, are dead.

A U.S. official says the Florida Naval station shooting suspect was an aviation student from Saudi Arabia named Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani and authorities are investigating if the shooting was terrorism-related.

The shooting reportedly happened in a building that housed several classrooms. As the base is primarily a training facility, that describes almost the entire base.

The public affairs officer for the base confirmed that reports of a shooting began at 6:30 a.m. Pensacola Police spokesman Mike Wood has confirmed that law enforcement responded to the active shooter.

Six other Saudi nationals were detained after the shooting, three of whom had filmed the incident.

Two responding law enforcement officers were wounded while exchanging gunfire with the suspect and people in the area report they heard about a dozen gunshots.

Law enforcement officials confirm that an Escambia County Sheriff’s Deputy shot and killed the gunman. Two deputies, including the one that killed the gunman, were shot and are being treated at local hospitals. Both are expected to survive.

Details on the other victims’ conditions have not been released.

Initially, 8 people were transported to a local hospital where one of those transported then died.

In total, 11 people were shot, 7 remain injured and four, including the shooter, are dead.

The FBI is now involved in the ongoing investigation.

NAS Pensacola remains closed until further notice and personnel will be evacuated throughout the day.

This is a developing story and will be updated as details emerge.
