CALEXICO, Calif. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Calexico East port of entry discovered 222 pounds of liquid methamphetamine worth $266,000.
On Tuesday, Jan. 21, at about 11 p.m., a 36-year-old male U.S. citizen driving a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado applied for entry. A CBP Officer referred the man and vehicle for a more in-depth inspection.
A CBP canine team screened the vehicle and the detector dog alerted to the gas tank area. The gas tank was removed and searched, which revealed an unusual liquid substance that began to crystalize. Officers field-tested the substance receiving a positive indication for the properties of methamphetamine.
“Drug trafficking organizations have one goal in mind, which is to get their product across,” said Officer in Charge, Sergio Beltran. “Concealing narcotics in gas tanks is one tactic and by utilizing our layered enforcement, we were able to stop this before it plagued our communities.”
CBP officers arrested the driver and turned him over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents with Homeland Security Investigations.
CBP officers seized the vehicle and liquid methamphetamine.
Criminal charges are merely allegations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
