Writing Process Tips: The Tools You Must Have

Writing can be a lonely process. Writers know it’s just you and your thoughts, plus the tools you have around to flesh out whatever it is that’s needing to get out of your system. A conducive writing environment is imperative, as well. Even if you have the story mapped out in your head, if the situation you’re in does not allow you to create your best, the result is still going to be subpar.

For writers, the best tools are what they have lying around. It’s one thing to have an idea, but it’s another to flesh it out beautifully. So if you’re a writer needing tips on what writing tools you need to have, fret not, as we’ve collated them for you. Here are the best tools a budding writer should have:

iA Writer

iA Writer is a text editor made by the design company, Information Architects. One of the best writing apps, it’s intuitive, simple, but carries enough features to turn articles into well-informed works of art. The dark mode feature is a killer, especially for late-night writing sessions. From a writer’s perspective, it makes sense that there are no distractions on the main interface – which pretty much sums up the app.

Another great feature of the software is it has sync features on iCloud, which means if you have a dedicated app on your laptop and phone, you can pick up where you left off anytime, anywhere. It also has a great word counter tool for novels and screenplays. It’s not a free app, but for the features it has – it’s truly worth it.

A trusty laptop

In today’s connected world, the worst thing to not invest in is a trusty laptop, especially if you’re a writer. A laptop is convenient, easy to use, and you can carry it around. A writer knows firsthand the importance of taking down notes and scribbling ideas when inspiration strikes. Sure, a smartphone may take care of that, but there’s still no beating the keyboard on a laptop.

At this point, you may ask – so what are the laptops recommendations you can give me? The new MacBook Pro 16” is certainly a great everyday driver, but it can take up too much space in your bag. Smaller form factor laptops may benefit you better, especially if you prefer to be mobile every day. An Asus laptop is certainly trustworthy. Or the new Huawei, for that matter.

Headphones

One of the most important things when writing in silence. Or soothing music. Studies have it that classical piano music increases productivity by 10%. So, having a dedicated in-ear headphone is imperative. Get the ones with noise cancellation, if possible, so that you can tune the outside world out. Wireless ones at that too, so you don’t have to worry about tangling wires.

The new Apple AirPods Pro is the one to beat for fit and soundproofing, but if you’re on a budget, the options from Sony and other indie brands are great alternatives. If you have a deeper pocket, getting quality wired headphones will be beneficial. Even without music, you can use it just to tune out the world around you.

A room of her own

It’s a cliché, but it works. Slyvia Plath’s quintessential essay isn’t one for naught, as a conducive environment for writing is as important as the ideas swimming in the head of writers. If you can afford it, separating your bedroom from your writing room will be more beneficial to your writing pace when compared to combining both in one room.

Make sure your writing room has a window, great ventilation, and enough mix of silence and noise for you to get going. Bright lights wake the brain up, so ensure the room is well-lit. There is also the matter of inspiration. Dark interiors induce grit and passion to your writing, while pastel colors incite happiness and calm.

Takeaway

There’s something to be said about writing just for the joy of it. Most writers are jaded beings, but they also feel so much without being maniacal about it. This is why it’s important to inspire the writers we have today and the upcoming young ones who demonstrate early talent. Having these tools certainly helps, so if you have a budding writer in your family, go ahead and provide them these things.
